It all started in my second year of university. I had plans to rent a house with my childhood friend.
We had been close since we were small and had already lived together during our first year. The rent was about 200k, and we agreed to split it 50/50.Ā
But while my friend's family was doing okay financially, mine was not. My parents were divorced, and I was left to hustle my way through life.
My dad, facing some financial hardship, could only give me 60% of my share of the rent, leaving me scrambling to get the rest on my own.
I was desperate. School was resuming soon, and I needed money for everythingārent, food, supplies, you name it. I was into forex at the time, using a paid group for trading signals.
The signals had worked with small amounts before, so I decided to go all in, hoping to multiply the money. I took a massive risk and invested not only my own rent money but also my friendās 50%. All my money, everything I had, was on the line.
Within minutes, the trade crashed, and I lost everything.
I couldnāt talk or even think straight that day. I was devastated. The idea of telling my friend that I had lost both our money was unbearable. Worse still, I had no way of getting 200k back.
With no other options, I reached out to friendsāpeople who seemed like they could help. But everyone ghosted me.
The people I called friends disappeared when I needed them most. I couldnāt even tell my friend about the lost rent, let alone my family. I was ready to give up, thinking Iād become homeless and had ruin my life for good.
At one point, I almost accepted my fate: I was going to be homeless. I thought, maybe if I just get half of the money, I can return my friend's part and leave him to find another roommate.
But even that didnāt work. I tried everything, but nothing came through. I was in my lowest, darkest place, even contemplating suicide.
Then, out of nowhere, a guy I barely knewāsomeone who was in his 4th year while I was in my 2ndāhit me up.
We weren't close. We didnāt even talk much, just exchanged jokes here and there. He hadnāt heard from me in a while, so he checked in.
At first, I pretended everything was fine, but eventually, I opened up and told him what had happened, expecting him to judge or just ignore me.Ā
Instead, he told me to send my account number.
I was shocked when he sent me 200k without asking for anything in return. I couldnāt believe it. This was someone I barely knew, who I hadnāt done anything for, but he saved me from total disaster. The relief I felt was overwhelming.
Youād think Iād have learned my lesson, right? Wrong.
Butāand this is where my stupidity comes ināinstead of immediately paying the rent, I thought I could make more money with it.
I invested the entire money again into forex, thinking I could make enough to cover not only the rent but also my upkeep. You can guess what happened next: I lost it all again.
Another 200k gone, and this time, I knew I was finished.
This time, it hit me even harder. I was done. I was seriously considering ending it all. There was no way out. I had to confess to everyoneāmy family, my friend, and his family. They were all disappointed, of course.
My friendās dad rented a house for him alone, and I begged to stay with him. But his father refused, saying I had to refund the money I lost and pay my share of the rent as well.
I was rendered homeless.
I couldnāt go back to school because I had nowhere to stay. I was stuck at home, feeling completely hopeless. Fast forward a bit, and the guy who had lent me the 200k came through againāhe found out I lost the money again.
Of course, he was disappointed, but instead of abandoning me, he took me in. He fed me, paid for my transport, gave me a roof over my head, and never once made me feel like a burden.Ā
He became like an older brother to me. He pushed me to become better, encouraged me to follow my passion, and even provided me with the resources and opportunities to make money legitimately.
I lived with him for a while, using his laptop to work, until I was able to buy my own. This guy transformed my life. He showed me what true kindness is.
I have achieved so much under his guidanceāI've made money, bought my own things, and built a future for myself. All because he believed in me when I didnāt even believe in myself.Ā
And through it all, this guy never asked for anything in return, not even the money I owed him.
Most people only see this kind of kindness in movies or read about it in books. But for me, it was real. He never gave me the cold shoulder, never made me feel like I owed himāeven though I did.
If you're reading this, big bro, just know I will forever be grateful to you. You've done so much for me, and I promise your efforts will never go to waste.
Iām now independent, making my own money, and following the path you helped me find. Youāve opened so many doors for me, and I havenāt even reached my full potential yetābut I will. I promise to make you proud someday. Iāll never betray the trust you placed in me.
Thank you for everything. May Allah continue to bless you.
To everyone reading, I hope you take something valuable from my story. Itās not just about losing or making moneyāitās about finding kindness when you least expect it, and never giving up, even when it feels like the world is against you.
And remember, don't make the same mistake twice when given an opportunity. Second chances are rare, and I was lucky enough to get one. Donāt be stupid like meālearn from your mistakes.
